NEET paper leak: NITI Aayog calls for thorough probe, stricter action

NITI Aayog member Vinod K Paul has called for a deep enquiry and investigation into the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG exams 2024. He emphasised that the responsible parties must be held accountable for what he termed a “criminal act” impacting the future of students. Paul’s remarks came in light of preliminary evidence suggesting malpractice in the exams.

“NEET UG examination questions were raised. Early investigations revealed irregularities and malpractices. With prima facie evidence, it is clear that stricter action is needed. Therefore, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been requested to undertake a comprehensive assessment and investigation of the entire issue,” said VK Paul, as reported by ANI.

He assured that the government is committed to uncovering the faults and ensuring accountability. “The government is serious about finding where the fault was and why it happened. Those responsible for this criminal act must be punished because this concerns the lives and careers of our young children,” Paul added.

Paul also addressed the postponement of the NEET PG exam, noting it was done to review and ensure the reliability of the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

“NEET PG has been postponed to take a fresh look at the SOPs. We want to ensure the examination inspires confidence, maintains sanctity, and earns trust,” he said.

Meanwhile, a seven-member high-level committee formed by the Centre to oversee transparency and scrutinise the National Testing Agency (NTA) is scheduled to meet on Monday, according to sources at the Ministry of Education. The CBI registered a criminal case on Sunday and formed special teams to probe the matter.

The central government’s decision to hand over the investigation to the CBI comes amid mounting criticism of the NTA, which conducted the NEET-UG exams. Allegations of irregularities have led to nationwide protests, with some calling for the NTA to be disbanded. Concerns intensified after an unprecedented 67 candidates achieved a perfect score of 720 out of 720. India Today
