ESI Corporation approves four new 100-bed hospitals in West Bengal
The Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) Corporation continues to bolster healthcare infrastructure with the operation of 165 ESI hospitals across India. The latest development includes the in-principle approval for setting up four new 100-bed hospitals in West Bengal, aimed at enhancing medical services in the region.
Current ESI hospital infrastructure
As of now, the country boasts 165 functional ESI hospitals. Out of these, 106 hospitals are managed by state governments, while the remaining 59 are operated by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC). These hospitals provide crucial healthcare services to employees covered under the ESI scheme, ensuring access to medical facilities and treatments.
Bed occupancy rates
The average bed occupancy rate across ESI hospitals stands at 46%. Notably, the bed occupancy rate in ESIC-run hospitals is approximately 57%, reflecting higher utilization compared to the 35% occupancy rate in state-run ESI hospitals. This data highlights the disparity in usage and possibly indicates areas for improvement in state-managed facilities.
New hospitals in West Bengal
The ESI Corporation has approved the establishment of four new 100-bed ESI hospitals in West Bengal. The new hospitals will be located in Darjeeling (Siliguri), Purba Medinapore (Haldia), North 24 Parganas (Garshyamnagar), and Paschim Medinapore (Kharagpur). This expansion aims to address the growing healthcare needs of employees in these regions, providing better access to medical care and reducing the burden on existing facilities.
Government commitment to healthcare
The announcement of new hospitals underscores the government’s commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure for workers. By setting up these new facilities, the ESI Corporation aims to ensure that employees have access to quality healthcare services closer to their homes. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the overall effectiveness and reach of the ESI scheme.
Conclusion
The Union Minister of State for Labour & Employment, Smt. Shobha Karandlaje, shared this information in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. The establishment of new ESI hospitals in West Bengal signifies a proactive step towards strengthening healthcare provisions for the workforce, reflecting the government’s dedication to the welfare of its employees. As these new hospitals come into operation, they are expected to significantly improve healthcare access and quality for ESI beneficiaries in the state. India CSR
