Changes at the helm

Narendra Modi, sworn in as prime minister for the third consecutive term, allocated portfolios to the council of ministers on June 10. The first cabinet meeting was held in the national capital on June 10.

BJP national president JP Nadda now holds the Minister of Health & Family Welfare portfolio. Nadda replaces Dr Mansukh Mandaviya who has been allocated the Ministry of Labour and Employment and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

JP Nadda was Health Minister in PM Modi’s first term from 2014. Nadda, whose extended term as BJP chief ends this month, is the sole representative from Himachal Pradesh in the BJP-led NDA government. He holds a law degree and started his political journey with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). He became president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the BJP’s youth wing, in 1991. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2012 and became a member of the BJP’s parliamentary board in 2014 when Amit Shah took over as the party president.

Shiv Sena’s Jadhav Prataprao Ganpatrao holds the portfolio of Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Ayush; and Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The 63-year-old was elected from Buldhana Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra.

Anupriya Patel holds the portfolio of Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Patel started her political journey as president of the Apna Dal (Soneylal) and was Minister of State for Commerce and Industry in the Modi government from 2021. Hailing from Kanpur, the 43-year-old was Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare from 2016 to 2019. Patel has been representing UP’s Mirzapur constituency since 2014. An alumna of Delhi’s Lady Shri Ram College, she is an MBA from ChattrapatiShahu Ji Maharaj University, Kanpur. Patel made her political debut in the 2012 UP election. She is the daughter of Soney Lal Patel, one of the founders of Apna Dal (Soneylal).
