A year of progress – Reflecting on MedTech and IVD in 2024

As we bid farewell to 2024, the healthcare sector, particularly the MedTech and in-vitro diagnostics (IVD) industries, stands on the cusp of transformation. This year has been marked by innovation, adaptability, and an ever-deepening focus on public health needs. However, despite significant milestones, challenges persist that require immediate attention as we prepare to usher in 2025.

2024 achievements
One of the most notable developments this year has been the enhanced role of MedTech in addressing critical healthcare needs. The integration of AI-powered diagnostics, remote monitoring systems, and advanced imaging techniques has redefined patient care. Innovations in minimally invasive surgeries and robotic systems have expanded treatment capabilities, offering improved precision and patient outcomes.

For the IVD sector, 2024 has been a year of growth and consolidation. Although the pandemic may be behind us, the focus on rapid, accurate diagnostics continues to thrive. Point-of-care testing technologies have surged. Notably, AHPI’s advocacy efforts have significantly reinforced the importance of accessible diagnostics and treatment in India’s healthcare ecosystem.
At AHPI, where I have had the privilege of serving for over a decade, we have continued to play a vital role in shaping healthcare policy and strengthening healthcare infrastructure. Our initiatives have contributed to the MedTech sector’s growth while advocating for policy improvements and the adoption of globally recognized quality standards within India’s healthcare landscape.

Gaps to bridge
While we celebrate the strides made in 2024, certain areas need continued focus to ensure sustained progress. Regulatory pathways need to be streamlined. The government has already made significant efforts in this direction through initiatives like the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. Building on these initiatives, further acceleration of regulatory processes will help bring advanced technologies to market more quickly while upholding safety and quality standards.

Moreover, expanding their reach across Tier-II and Tier-III cities remains a priority. The government’s push for the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) is a step in the right direction. However, additional efforts to promote inclusive policies can ensure that the benefits of cutting-edge diagnostic tools and medical devices are available to all, regardless of geographical location.

Lastly, while technological advancements have improved healthcare capabilities, affordability remains critical.

Expectations for 2025 – A new horizon
Looking ahead to 2025, we expect deeper collaborations among the MedTech industry, regulators, and healthcare providers. With AHPI’s continued advocacy for better healthcare infrastructure, the momentum generated this year should carry forward. Strengthening public-private partnerships (PPPs) will drive MedTech and IVD integration into mainstream healthcare delivery.

Additionally, the rise of digital health ecosystems should be a key area of focus. Integrating these technologies across public health programs can revolutionize healthcare access in rural areas. 2025 should also see more cohesive strategies in addressing regulatory bottlenecks, enabling faster and smoother market entry for innovative devices.

As we close this chapter, let us take pride in our progress while remaining aware of the road ahead. With a collaborative, patient-centric approach, 2025 holds great promise for the MedTech and IVD industries in enhancing healthcare for all.
