The Kerala state health department has reached an agreement with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, for setting up state-of-the-art trauma care centers in the seven government medical college hospitals in the state. The state health department is aiming at bringing down the number of casualties in road accidents by 50 percent in 3 years by setting up these trauma care centers.

The expertise from the Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre at AIIMS, New Delhi, will be used for setting up these centers in the state. AIIMS will be providing training in trauma care to the doctors and the nursing staff. It has been decided to send a team of doctors and nurses from each medical college to New Delhi for the training program. The AIIMS protocol gives more stress on nurses in trauma care.

The union health ministry has already approved the project for setting up a level one trauma care center at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital and a similar proposal for the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital is under the consideration of the union government.
