Full-fledged Dept. of Surgical Gastroenterology for TVMCH

The Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TVMCH) here received a full-fledged Department of Surgical Gastroenterology on Thursday.

According to the surgeons, gastrointestinal surgical problems are very common in clinical practice. Common esophageal, stomach, intestinal, colonic, liver, biliary and pancreatic disorders constitute major volume of general hospital outpatient and inpatient care.

Gastrointestinal, liver, biliary and pancreatic cancers are on the rise due to change in lifestyle and alcoholism. Since surgical intervention saves patients or prolong life significantly, the new facility is likely to play a big role in providing quality care to these issues at affordable cost.

“There is no surgical gastroenterology department to cater to patients suffering from common but serious diseases in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Virudhunagar districts. The facility will provide patients modern surgical remedies, which are advanced with minimum invasive laparoscopic surgeries,” said doctors.

The super speciality block is sanctioned and construction is in full swing. High end liver, pancreatic, biliary and gastrointestinal surgical operations will be performed in the institution, S.M. Kannan, Dean, said. – The Hindu
