MY Hospital has been authorized to perform cochlear implant surgeries.

"The hospital has received permission to perform cochlear implant surgeries. We are in the process of procuring medical equipment. Once the setup is ready, we will start the surgeries," the head of department (HOD) of ENT, Dr RC Mundra told media-persons.

The hospital authority has sent a proposal to the state government for the procurement of medical equipment for the procedure.

Choithram Hospital has also been permitted to start cochlear implant procedures. The permission is likely to benefit around 500 children waiting to undergo the surgery across the state.

According to experts, cochlear implant is beneficial for hearing-impaired children up to the age of 6 years. The procedure will be less effective if the affected child undergoes the surgery later on.

The state government provides financial aid of Rs 6.5 lakh to needy children to undergo cochlear implant surgeries. However, a long registration list of affected children and less number of hospitals performing the surgery was posing as hurdles for children in timely treatment.

The authority has so far permitted two private hospitals in the city to perform cochlear implant surgeries. – TOI
