The Kolkata Municipal Corporation is taking over the garbage clean-up job at all government hospitals located in its jurisdiction. Till now, it was the responsibility of the public works department (PWD).

The decision came a day after chief minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed her displeasure at the garbage strewn on the premises of Sambhunath Pandit Hospital.

Mayor Sovan Chatterjee  has confirmed that the KMC would take over the clean up job at all government-run hospitals in the city, following instructions from the chief minister. "PWD is responsible for the maintenance of government hospitals, including keeping it clean. But now that the chief minister has given out orders, the KMC will take up the responsibility," the mayor said.

A source said Mamata, during her visit to Sambhunath Pandit on Tuesday , questioned the hospital superintendent why cleanliness at the facility was not maintained and even asked him to talk to the mayor.Shortly after the CM left, Chatterjee, along with KMC officials working for the garbage division, arrived at the hospital and started the clean-up drive. – TOI
